What is responsive design?

Responsive design is an approach to building websites so that one page reshapes itself to fit whatever device someone is using. On a wide screen, content might sit in several columns; on a phone, those same elements stack into a single readable column, text stays legible, and buttons stay easy to tap. You do not build a different site for mobile - the one page simply responds.

It matters because most people now browse on their phones. If your site only looks right on a desktop, mobile visitors get tiny text, sideways scrolling, and buttons they cannot press, and they usually leave. Imagine a plumber sharing their website link over text. If the page loads cleanly on the customer's phone with a tappable Call now button, they get the job; if it is a shrunken mess, they move on. Responsive design also keeps your content above the fold in view on every device, so your hero section lands well whatever screen someone is on.
