What is a mockup?

A mockup is a detailed, static picture of how a page will look once it is finished. Unlike a plain sketch, a mockup includes the real brand colours, the chosen fonts, sample photos and polished text, laid out just as they will appear. It is the design come to life visually, even though it is not yet a working website you can click through.

It matters because seeing the real look, rather than imagining it, helps everyone agree before the effort of building begins. You can judge whether the colours feel right, whether the headings grab attention, and whether the page feels like your brand. It is much easier to say "make the button bigger" on a mockup than after a site is live. A mockup usually grows out of a simpler wireframe and puts your chosen colour palette and typography on full display, so you can react to the actual feel of the page.
