What is a subdomain?
Subdomain, explained
A subdomain is the part that comes before your main domain name. In blog.yoursite.com, the word blog is the subdomain, yoursite.com is your main domain. You can create subdomains without buying a new address, and each one can point to different content or even a different service entirely. Common examples are shop.yoursite.com, help.yoursite.com, or events.yoursite.com.
Subdomains are handy when you want to keep a distinct area of your business clearly separated but still tied to your brand. A restaurant might use a subdomain for online bookings, while a consultant might use one for a members-only resources area. Because a subdomain works like its own space, you can host it wherever you like, style it differently, and manage it on its own. Setting one up is done through your DNS settings, where you add a small record telling browsers where the subdomain should lead. For most small businesses a single main domain is plenty, but subdomains give you room to grow and organise as your online presence expands.
How it works in Promino
Promino gives you a free subdomain to work with the moment you start, so your site has a live address while you're still designing it. When you're ready to go live on your own domain, you can connect either your main domain or a subdomain of it.
Pointing a subdomain at your Promino site follows the same guided flow as any custom address, with secure HTTPS handled for you. See how it works with custom domains in Promino.
